Housing Program
Historically, housing has been a critical concern for persons with disabilities. Numerous public hearings, focus groups and needs assessments conducted with persons with disabilities have identified the lack of affordable, accessible, integrated housing as one of the biggest challenges they face. IndependenceFirst has received increasing requests for housing information and assistance. In developing our current strategic plan, housing was identified as a major issue to focus on and as such, we identified several specific objectives to work on related to housing. In particular, it is the overall desire of IndependenceFirst to work to increase the amount of affordable, accessible and integrated housing available in our community.
To address these goals, IndependenceFirst expanded its staff. In addition to our Homeownership Specialist, we have added a Housing Program Coordinator and a Housing Specialist. These positions are responsible for activities to expand the housing choices of low- and moderate-income persons with disabilities in the Milwaukee area.
IndependenceFirst has worked to establish a helpful, homeownership program for low-income persons with disabilities. To date 200 new homeowners have been assisted in their home purchase through our program! Although the program is only about 3 years old, there have been no known loan defaults for any of our homeowners.
Funding is needed for staff salaries, program operations, and emergency assistance funds.
